Facts about Warrington
Warrington is a large town situated on the banks of the River Mersey, it is 2o miles East of Liverpool and 20 West of Manchester. It has a population of 209,000 people and it is the largest town in the County of Cheshire.
Warrington was built by the Romans, because of its low bridging point on the River Mersey and was a Market Town. Warrington has three motorways running through it the M6, M56 and the M62.
The West Coast Main Line runs through Warrington, North to South and the Liverpool to Manchester railway runs West to East through the town. The Manchester Ship Canal also runs through the South of the town.
Warrington was historically part of Lancashire. Warrington expanded during the Industrial Revolution even more so when the River Mersey became navigable in the 18th Century.
Todays Borough of Warrington was formed in 1974 and was formerly the County Borough of Warrington.
